Taboos restrict the freedom of choice of targeted individuals and oftentimes whole communities by associating certain wants and acts with shame. Actions forbidden by taboos are not the same as those forbidden by law, but oftentimes social expectations can greatly influence lawmakers.
Some taboos can be so ingrained in cultural norms that people who choose to inflict violence against individuals who go against accepted practice often get away with doing so even if the law does not permit them to.
