Collectiva Shamila: nurturing collaborative feminism

We at Sharq.Org initiated a transnational women-led collective in 2022. It was a bold undertaking. While our first Collectiva included women from one country focused on one topic, Collectiva Shamila brought together women, men and non-binary people in different Arab region countries to collaboratively learn about, engage with and write about various taboos that hold society back and the activism that seeks to nurture change and enhance development.

Shamila – transliterated from the Arabic: شاملة – English translation: Inclusive

Our objective was to enhance the participation of women and youths in the Arab region in peace building and politics through transnational collaboration. Based on reflections about the experience written by some of the 30 members, we succeeded. This is very encouraging for us and we are determined to expand the Collectiva beyond Iraq, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Syria and Yemen, from where our inaugural members hail.

If you’re interested in learning and teaching, designing and developing, creating and collaborating, and envision a world that is inclusive and kind where judgement and violence are but memories, get in touch.

This thought and resource space explores both the impact of taboos that promote discrimination and the role of youths in promoting inclusion through incremental change.
