Makers of the day

We often hear that the youth is the hope of the future and the builders of the next generation. There are many other titles that place the youth as dependent on the future and far from the present. But what if we look at them as the makers of today and partners in the present on their journey to making the future in the way they want and dream of?

There is no doubt that young people have an important role in any society, as they usually are large in number and oftentimes are the best and most capable group to advance society economically, socially, culturally and politically.

However, over time we have witnessed a significant decline in the participation of youth in political life and decision-making in my country and there are several reasons for this:

  • First – their insufficient knowledge of their rights and political roles, i.e. the absence of a societal role in raising awareness about the importance of engaging in political life.
  • Secondly – the lack of transparency and fluctuation of laws, including the failure to reduce the voting age to 18 years. For example, how can a young man marry at the age of eighteen, but not have the right to cast his vote.
  • Third – the difficult economic situation and its effects, which makes most young people unable to participate in decision-making. All of their free time is spent thinking about how to immigrate or find a decent job that will protect them from humiliation and poverty. The economic factor is an important factor, and it cannot be overlooked or considered as an insignificant or excessive indicator.
  • Fourth – non-belonging and the constant search for an identity, and the lived reality may have a multiplier effect, as it forces them to feel a permanent withdrawal from reality or escape from it.
  • Fifth – the youth’s lack of confidence in the possibility of change and bringing about development.
  • Sixth-education is an important factor, especially when it comes to gender. Many do not believe in women or girls having decision-making roles. This in itself is unfair to women.

Today, it is important to continue believing in the role of the youth and their capabilities and to allow their opinions and ideas to see the light. The youth is the hope of the future and tomorrow, and most importantly, they are citizens of today and partners in life and decision-making.
