Taboohat: An Introduction

Taboohat: Transliteration of an Arabic word meaning Taboos

This multilingual platform presents articles, opinion pieces and interviews about various social taboos that impact people, most often women, in the Arab region. Social taboos create obstacles for individuals and communities. They prevent choice and progress. They promote shame and rejection, hindering acceptance, collaboration and development.

It is our objective to encourage dialogue around taboos and their consequences – including marital rape, abortion and child marriage – and encourage activism and political participation in a bid to deconstruct the frameworks that sustain taboos and their debilitating impact on society and development.

This site and its content were developed collaboratively by members of Collectiva Shamila, a collective of women and youths instigated and nurtured in 2022 by Sharq.Org, a media development and support organisation that aims to strengthen pluralism and critical thought throughout the Arab region and beyond.

Collectiva Shamila and Taboohat were developed within the context of a project run in association with Firma Alexandra Sandels, a Swedish research consultancy focusing on the Middle East, and the Swedish Institute’s Young Voices Initiative.

The platform’s visual identity and website adaptation were developed by the graphic design firm bananamonkey.

This thought and resource space explores both the impact of taboos that promote discrimination and the role of youths in promoting inclusion through incremental change.
