Where will I be in a decade from now?

The thought of immigrating to a new country has always been etched in the minds of young people in the Middle East and North Africa. I also belong in this category of people. I will not deny that the idea of immigration has crossed my mind at times. Now, however, if someone asks me whether I am contemplating leaving Morocco for a life abroad my answer will definitely be “no.”

Why is that?

Well, the most important reason for me as a feminist are the positive signs we see here in Morocco regarding women´s rights and freedoms in the country. As I write this text in 2023, the Moroccan Family Code which regulates women´s rights is up for review following years of political struggles. In addition, an amendment of Morocco´s criminal code, in place in 1963, is also in the pipeline. It will be a historic event if the amendments pass.

Of course, I cannot be certain that the amendments will be as extensive as I and many others here in Morocco hope. But the mere fact that key legislation will be reviewed and amended in some form is a positive sign for Morocco.

There is also another positive piece of news: the development and restructuring of Morocco´s education sector. More scientific and theoretical content will be included in the curriculum, which makes me hopeful for our future generations. It´s key that they learn to master critical thinking based on scientific theories and methods. This will help reduce reliance among the public on superstition, ancient beliefs and traditions, which in turn have contributed to restricting women´s rights in Morocco for many years.

I shall also not forget to mention the major infrastructure and development projects that will be implemented here in Morocco. They will surely enhance the quality of life of Moroccans:

  • Mohammed VI Tower
  • Casablanca Financial Center
  • The industrial city “Tanger Tech”
  • The National Strategy for Energy Efficiency
  • “Fasik” dam in Guelmim province
  • Noor Solar Energy Project
  • The large water desalination project in Casablanca
  • TGV Marrakech Agadir
  • The new agricultural strategy “Al Jabal Al Akhdar 2020-2030”
  • The port strategy for 2030
  • Green “Amon” for pioneering green hydrogen production
  • The National Strategy for Education Reform “For a School of Quality and Equity for All”

On a final note, I love my country with all its authentic attributes: its cuisine, its clothes, its ornaments, its beautiful customs, its Amazigh heritage and its distinguished architecture. I have hope that my Morocco is a place of diversity, coexistence and peace.
